Ek Haseena Thi is a 2004 Indian Hindi crime thriller film directed by Mohit Suri. The story revolves around the murder of a woman who is about to give birth, and the investigator's search for her missing child. The film stars Udita Goswami as Ira Dixit, an investigative journalist on maternity leave (on suspicion of pregnancy) who investigates the crime; Neil Nitin Mukesh as Amritpal Singh Pagal, a simpleton with an artistic bent; and Shreyas Talpade as Inspector Manoj Kumar Sharma, who heads the investigation. The film was first released on 27 July 2004 and was screened on 24 August 2004 at the Montreal World Film Festival. It was later awarded the Best Film at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2005. It was later dubbed into Tamil as "Naan Irukkan Madhurai" by VS. However, the Tamil version is completely different to the original film, despite featuring all of its same cast members. This crime thriller revolves around the murder of a woman who is about to give birth to her child, and asks us to guess whether she was killed before or after she gave birth. The police investigator, Inspector Manoj Sharma (Shreyas Talpade), enlists the help of the pregnant journalist Ira Dixit (Udita Goswami). As they begin their investigation, Inspector Sharma realizes that the murderer is not after all money or valuables. He decides he must first find out what the real motive behind killing was. Manoj's first lead is to find out if Ira is pregnant, but he soon discovers that she actually had a mental trauma since her son was abducted by child traffickers. Now, Inspector Sharma has his next task to crack the case and bring back his son to him. "Ek Haseena Thi" received positive reviews from critics who appreciated the performances of Udita Goswami, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Shreyas Talpade. The film won the Best Film Award at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2005. The film was later dubbed into Tamil (as "Naan Irukkan Madhurai") by VS in 2006 starring newcomers Karthi and Arya in lead roles. The film was not well-received when it came to theatres, with many reviewers citing that there was no need for a sequel to this film, which also had different casts (especially that the lead roles were played differently) and themes.
